Self watering plants! Help!

We are going away for 5 days, and we don't have anyone to water our outside baskets/potted annuals. Any ideas to keep them from dying before we return?

  • Think about baby pool &empty totes and even the kitchen sink. Also putting everything in the shade too even if it is a sun loving plant. Now this method of putting then in water will cause some yellowing because of too much moisture. Hope this helps. Just put in about 2-3 inches of water for the plants. Good luck and have a great trip

I always move mine to the shade when I go away. And you might try these cool plant nannies @Becky W posted: http://www.hometalk.com/diy/grow/plants/upcycling-wine-bottles-to-a-plant-nanny-533398

Douglas Hunt, you made me laugh...we used to water the tomatoes this way with the old coke bottles when I was a kid back in the stone age! I would never have thought of this. Be sure and set baskets down on the floor/ground so bottles won't fall out if wind blows. I like the setting them in a small amount of water. This is a good reason why watering crystals are so great in plants. You can get them almost everywhere. They go in the top 2" or so of the soil...you have to take some of the soil out so you can allow for them to swell up.
  • Kiddie pool for sure with about 4 inches of water added, but also place them under a deck if you have it. This will also protect them from any sudden/severe weather.

The kiddies pool and shade, if potted, buy those globes that you fill with water, takes about week to empty into potted plants.
