When separating Iris how long will they last before planting?

I have recently dug up some Iris, because they were not flowering. I separated them and I cut back the fans. How long can I keep them before planting? I haven't found a spot for them.

I spilt mine and replant in and around September. It needs full sun , and the roots should be just below the surface, even if a bit shows above the ground its ok. I just read this somewhere. I live in Chicago Zone 5.

The rhizome needs to be baked by the sunshine to encourage flowering so should be above ground.

you might want to make sure to plant them near bug-resisting plants, like lemongrass or basil

In the desert, I remove them in July, separate and store until I plant in early September.
