Shade plant other than Hosta

by Lynn
I live in a shaded area of a park and everyone grows Hosta (which I have too and like), but I would like to plant something other types of shade lovers for under my tree and other shaded areas. Are there any suggestions my fellow gardeners have? If there are any that have flowers, that would be a bonus. Thanks. Happy Gardening.

there are soooo many (including a huge variety of Hostas that bloom at different times) - ferns, columbines, bleeding heart, (depending on the depth of shade - does it get any light?). I have a fully covered courtyard that has lots of container plants - just google shade plants - or ask Douglas Hunt. He's like an encyclopedia of growing stuff.

There are a lot of beautiful shade plants besides Hostas; there are astilbes, coral bells, you could try a variety of caladium, primroses, hellebores does nice in the shade or maybe some jerusalem sage which is a nice ground cover with pretty purple flowers; and there is trillium and gardenia. Hope this helps!! Happy Gardening

@Janice Lahew These all sound great too. I love the smell of gardenia - that is one I am definitely going to plant. Thanks.

Toad Lilies, Coral Bells, Columbines are what I have and see the two posts above mine have given you more ideas. Good Luck to you!

@Donna Anspach HA - I love the name - Toad Lilies - sounds like something I should plant. My mother made me a large ceramic frog that would fit in, and I am sure, would be quite happy.

Lily of the Valley does well, and provides a beautiful scent, but it is very invasive.

@Marion Nesbitt Lily of the Valley does have a beautiful scent. I was under the impression these were difficult to grow, and I never thought of them as invasive. Thanks for the advice.

Oakleaf Hydrangea, Kerria Shrub, Hakone Grass, Lady Ferns, Solomon's Seal, Variegated Spurge, Variegated Lily Turf, Bleeding Hearts are just a few I think of that you might want to try, Lynn!

I do love ferns. I know this post is old (where does the time go?). But, I wanted to tell you that I found this post of mine and read your comment about ferns. You can guess what I am going to be shopping for this weekend. Thanks a million. {hugs} lynn xo
