you could leave 8-12 inches of vine though...you want to cut back an autumn clematis anytime after it blooms up until the time you spot green shoots to have the heaviest bloom production...be sure to fertilize and water deeply(roots go straight down up to 2 ft!)once chance of hard frost has passed
In the midwest we cut ours down in March....leave it 18 inches tall. May be starting to grow at that time, but depends on the spring we have. Doesn't matter, just cut it down in March.
