Prune a little at a time and make sure this is done when it is cool out to alleviate additional stress on the plants.
The type of plant does matter for blooms (I.e: azalea), but as Janet answered, early spring will work. The worst time is right before winter because it will stimulate new growth.
Look up your specific plant on line. I agree with these other 2 people, but different plants do have some different pruning needs.
Hello Bill. The rule of thumb that I follow is: from Spring thru Fall prune your plants during months whose name includes the letter "R". For example you can prune April but not May (May does not have a R in it). Hope this helps. Good luck.
Marcie's advice is spot on. Do some on-line research for specific plants in your planting zone. Plants growing in the mid-east region have different requirements from those growing farther north.
