Prune a little at a time and make sure this is done when it is cool out to alleviate additional stress on the plants.

The type of plant does matter for blooms (I.e: azalea), but as Janet answered, early spring will work. The worst time is right before winter because it will stimulate new growth.

Look up your specific plant on line. I agree with these other 2 people, but different plants do have some different pruning needs.

Hello Bill. The rule of thumb that I follow is: from Spring thru Fall prune your plants during months whose name includes the letter "R". For example you can prune April but not May (May does not have a R in it). Hope this helps. Good luck.

Thanks alot, I will try to remember about the months with the letter"R". I will let them go ahead and bloom, then in Sept, Oct. or Nov, before it gets too cold I will prune them.

Marcie's advice is spot on. Do some on-line research for specific plants in your planting zone. Plants growing in the mid-east region have different requirements from those growing farther north.
