What causes this to happen?

I am just curious about what in nature causes this to happen? I have found about 12 of these leaves over the past 3 years as I am walking my dog. We live in the mountains of North Carolina. The leaves are all from the same type of leaves. I have tried to look this up on the computer, but I have not been successful. Thank you in advance for any answers.

I use to live in nc also and have seen this. I always thought it was eaten that way by some kind of bug
The insect OUGHT to be named... the lacemaker!
I have flowers with leaves of the same pattern ( I too live in NC) discovered it is small black with yellow stripes worms, not one but colonies of them.
Several insects can cause this. The bug eats the softer parts of the leave leaving the harder cellulose behind, kind of like eating meat of it ribs and leaving the bone. What is left is the cellulose skeleton of the leaf.

We have it on our rose bushes.....found a beetle in the blooms so thought that was it....we dusted them with rose dust so we shall see. I understand Japanese Beetles are bad this year and they do eat leaves like you have pictured.
Yep. Japanese beetles. No spray or insect killer will get rid of these nuisances either! U need a Japanese beetle bug trap consisting of 2 pieces of plastic, a smelly lure, & a bag that hangs below. They have them here in Michigan at all the large home improvement stores. The bugs come out here right on July 1st every yr! We have to change the bag often. Good luck!
