I just saw that I needed to do this for my seedling too! I think it means to slowly expose it to stronger elements thereby making the seedling more hardy than before and preparing it to grow on it's own outdoors. The method I read said to keep the seedling outdoors during the day but to bring it in at night.

you can start the hardening off process by putting a fan on your seedlings, leave the fan set for low. the idea is to strengthen the seedlings stem i.e. it's support system. if your seedlings are on a heat mat, gradually - over 2 -3 days turn it down to off. if you have a warmish protected spot out doors, you can set your seedlings there. key word-protected. temps in some low lying ares will be colder than the average temp. you don't want a frost. if you have a big garden consider a pvc pipe hoop house. or row cover..which ever term in your local designates pvc pipe bents nearly in half to make to make a support for a plastic film that will over your tender plants.
