Most Hydrangeas should not be pruned until the new growth starts to emerge in spring.That is the best way to distinguish the old wood as most bloom on old wood. Only dead wood should be pruned or you will risk not having flowers for next year
Cut dead blooms anytime and dry them for flower arrangements. Prune dead limbs in fall when you can see which are dead. Trim for shape in early and late spring. Also do a soil check to see if you will get the color you prefer. Best wishes 😇
Trim them down in the fall, as close to the ground as possible if you want large blooms next year.
