Surprisingly, some fruit pits cannot reproduce. With the hybridization of so many current plants..... And corporate/government greed. However if you have a tree that has been well established and is perhaps an heirloom, you will need a fresh pit. Remember for peace or nectarines and such.... The seed is inside the pit. Start it indoors by placing it in a shallow container lined with paper towels. Put the seed on very damp paper towels and cover with a matching layer of paper towels (also wet). A windowsill that gets lots of sun is best. Mist regularly, keeping the towels damp. Eventually you will get either a sprout or a rotted seed. If you are fortunate enough to get a seed...... Transfer to a small pot, sprout facing up into some high quality garden soil with natural fertilizer and some peat. Keep in a sunny spot and check your soil damp not soggy.
most grocery store fruits will not germinate; many fruit trees are grafted to sterile stock; never hurts to try -- but the fruit you choose to use has to be fully ripe ( and most are picked 'green' so they don't over-ripen in the stores)... good luck!
