Better Homes and Gardens published a book called Step by Step Shade Gardening. It has 31 pages with 5 colored pictures per page with growing needs of plants/shrubs that grow in the shade for all growing zones.

As far as deer are concerned. Deer will nibble just about anything. Supposedly they don't like lilies, but I've seen them snip off ever flower to taste it and spit them all on the ground. Every flower gone! I've even seen a large vegetable garden caged with chain like fencing 6 feet high with a roof to keep deer away.

Inpatience have all new varities. Some all sun, partial sun. And they don't cost a lot. A whole flat of 50, or so, is $10.00?? If you plant them close together, they mound themselves and it is spectacular!! Don't just plant one here and one there. They become nothing. Plant them close together. You will be amazed how beautiful this can be.

try checking High Country Gardens website. They have filters for everything from deer and rabbit pests, to climate zones, to amount of light, heat and water. You can get a good idea of what to plant just from that - whether you buy from them or not.

Mexican heather is a great little plant that has tiny purple flowers all spring and summer into the fall. It is drought tolerant. Needs some sun and doesn't care about the shade. They are annuals, so I have to buy them every year, but worth the 3.88 I pay.

Ground cover? Shrubs?? What's your intent?

Impatiens (mentioned above) and non-native plants and ornamentals are often salad to deer. They even go for roses... just later than others.

Many bulbs (except tulips) are toxic... lily of the valley, daffodils, hyacinth... that covers spring. And as long as they get sun before the leaves grow on the trees, you're good.
