Select a pot with drainage holes large enough for the roots. Place soil in the bottom, position the plant and fill the rest in with your potting soil.

Plant in pot or ground using a porous potting mix that will not smash roots. I use Miracle Grow. Spread roots carefully and place over a mounded soil inside a shallow hole. Cover gently. Water throughly. Optional: Put pinch of rooting hormone in water or use a teaspoon of root booster in a gallon of water for first watering. Keep the planting damp for the first week or so to prevent wilting.

I started a Christmas cactus in water and it’s doing so well I’ve been tempted to leave it but we both know plants get minerals and sustenance from dirt so it needs to be potted. Put some dirt in the bottom of the pot, hold your rooting plant upright while you’re filling in dirt around it. Spread out the roots a bit so they won’t be jammed into one area. Add enough dirt to make sure it’s supported and will grow up, not sidewise.

Water it, cross your fingers and hope it takes root.
