I have used both. Depends on the variety of tomato planted and how big they get. As long as they get caged or staked, it doesn't really matter as long as your plants are healthy and producing.
I use both, but prefer the stakes as they outgrow the cages fairly quickly and then you have to add stakes with the cages to allow them to continue growing.
i like to stake my own...sometimes the wire cage doesn't hold up

THANKS EVERYBODY FOR YOUR ANSWERS. I USED BOTH RAN OUT OF STAKES HAD 2 CAGES AND BORROWED ONE FROM A FRIEND. GUESS IT DUE TO SO MUCH RAIN THEY REALLY GREW AND HAVE SOME AS BIG AS A SAUCER. GOOD TOO. LOL
