When and how to trim back asparagus?

this is the 2no year for our asparagus bed and we did get enough spears for a couple of meals. We have let the plants just continue to grow and they are over 6' tall. Should we cut them off? If so when and to what height.

Do not cut them off. Allow them to go to seed. They look beautiful. You can easily clean off the dead debris in March and prepare the bed for the next set of shoots to come up. We have had our garden for over 20 years.

We live in Western Kentucky. We don't trim our asparagus back. We let it keep growing, it makes a beautiful fern with red berries on it and that furnishes the roots with supplements and sunshine for next years plants. They will turn brown on their own and then we just mow them down in early spring. If your plants were planted properly they will last for more than 30 years. Ours are about 33 years old and still produce well. Good luck.
