orchid potting medium
You will get different answers from different people. Orchids are a plant that live in the rain forest canopy attached to the bark of a tree. I feel that orchid bark is the most natural thing for it to live in. An orchid loves to be root bound. I have had one for over two years and just repotted it only because the bark was breaking down. If you don't know if it should be repotted or not, take it to a local greenhouse and ask them, they usually will tell you. One of the greenhouses where I live even gives free classes on how to care for orchids and how to repot them and will even help you repot it for a nominal fee for supplies. If you repot in bark, it is easy to water them if you have an inner pot so you can soak them in tepid water only for at least fifteen minutes in both pots, them you take out the inner pot and dump the water out of the outside pot and leave the inner pot in the sink to drain. The wood chips soak up enough moisture to keep the roots moist and give it the humidity it needs. About once a week is enough. Fertilize with a good name spray for orchids, as directed on the bottle. As I said, not everyone uses the same planting material for their orchids. Do not let anyone talk you into watering with ice cubes. How would you like to take ice baths instead of a nice hot bath or shower?
