Never known of a situation for cutting back bleeding hearts. They die back every year on their own. It would help to know more about the specific conditions.
I have a white one and I cut mine back in late Autumn after all leaves have withered and died. I cut it back down to about 5 inches. I also keep it mulched well in the summer in a shady area of my garden
I have always let mine die back on their own. I guess if your concerned by how they look during that time you could bundle up the leaves and stalks and tie them together somehow. I don't bother, when they are dry enough to break off on their own I take them off and dispose of them so they don't encourage mold and such.
