What's the best flower/plant to grow in Texas?
I know that opinions vary, but what's your opinion?!I have great luck w Rosemary plants. Green all year long.
You can cut them back in fall or spring. But be careful and not over prune. Hydrangeas only bloom on old wood but cut too much and they'll need a year to recover. Don't forget to fertilize your plant with a good quality brand specifically for hydrangeas.
You can cut them back about half but don't expect them to bloom that first year after cutting.
When you have a flowering plant, you usually trim RIGHT after they bloom, before they set next years blooms. Trim No more than 1/3 of the plant each year. My species dies back and reblooms from the ground on new growth. So I don’t have to trim.
After flowering has ceased, I completely cut out every stalk that had a bloom on it, leave the others, they will bloom next year. If you have had an extremely cold winter they probably won't bloom. To propagate them cut 5" cuttings from the tips of lower or back-side stems in July. (that stem won't bloom next year) Trim leaves back but don't cut them off completely. Stick them in styrofoam cups filled with seed-starter. Make sure you have 2 joints, one goes under the soil, the other above it. Water with 1 or 2 teaspoons of water every other day and they will all root. Then set them in a sunny window and let them grow! I pot them up around Christmas for gifts! They will bloom by Father's day.
