the best time to divide perennials is in the fall. Should you decide to divide them now chances are they will take some time to bounce back. Many have said they have not had problems but it would not be my recommendation. Also you location was not specified.

I live in central Minnesota. I divide my hostas in the spring and never had a problem.

The rule I always heard for transplanting perennials is - if it blooms in the spring, plant it in the fall , if it blooms in the fall transplant in the spring. It's always worked for me. I have divided hostas in the early spring (March in Kansas) and kept them in pots in a cold frame until the first of May and then transplanted them. They did not bloom the first year but I had to get them out of their location or lose them to construction. Perennials can really be transplanted most any time, just give extra water if it is in the summer. They might not do too great the first year but most will bounce back in the next growing season.
