It's optional. We cut ours down this month (November) so we don't have to do it in spring. Some people like to leave theirs through winter for the birds to hide and gather tufting for nests and to see it blowing in the wind. As long as it is cut before it is time for new growth, it will be fine.

We leave it all winter and trim in February before new growth begins.
