Until they grow roots.
until you get a good start of roots. Grow in a small see-through glass and watch them grow. Be aware if you plant mint in your yard. They will grow rampant. It's hard to control. When planting in the ground I've "tried" to control the mint by digging down into the ground and putting metal at least 12" in the ground on four sides and planting the mint in dirt within that area. It still finds its way to straggle. It grows well in pots but if sitting on the ground will grow through the hole(s) and attach to thr ground. Good luck and enjoy.
Keep them in there until you see the roots growing. Then you can replant
Good luck and keep us posted!
You can actually dig into the root and just cut away part of the plant. Mint grows so fast and this is my preferred way to expand plants verses sticking stems in water. However about a week or two and they should form new roots in water if in the sunlight.
