Peonies need sun to produce blooms. It could be that the plant got enough sun in early spring to generate the buds but a nearby tree grew back its leaves and the sun is now blocked. The buds die because the plants no longer get enough sun to support the blossoms. Best of luck!

They also need ants. Yes, ants.

If you bought the plant within a year ago from Walmart or any other national nursery, they probably have a one year guarantee to replace the plant. But this year just might not be that plant's year to shine. Several reasons are given by Hillela up above. Maybe give it more time to mature, and make sure it's not getting too much standing moisture. Best wishes 😇

Thank you very much for taking the time to answer. We do have ants in that area of the yard. They do have sun all day. The plants are at least 15 years old, so they are mature plants and have been the same place for that entire time. The only thing I can think might have a bearing on it might be too much moisture!
