I had this problem, mine was caused by to much shade. I had a larger tree removed, due to being to close to house, and for the first time mine bloomed.
I also have had this problem. If you have a large tree causing too much shade, either thin out the tree canopy or move the hydrangea. They like morning sun, afternoon shade, like on the east side of your house, the best.
I trimmed mine, which is years old, and pruned it really hard. This season it has fewer blossoms, but looks good! So maybe you pruned it back too much? I had to prune mine to get it where I wanted the shape to be. Needs morning sun and shade in the afternoon to look good.
