Why won`t my sweet potatos in water start vineing?
-
Cathy Murphy on Apr 12, 2014My grandmother had these vines all over her back porch. She used a whole potato, though. If you got the potato from a grocery store it was probably treated to not sprout. May sure it is "homegrown", maybe from a vegetable market or at a flea market that has vegetable vendors. Good luck. Brings back a lot of good memories.Helpful Reply

Norrie Downey on Apr 12, 2014The problem is with the spray they put on the fruits and vegetables to prevent them from sprouting. Try getting them at an organic food store.Helpful Reply

Tammy Grebba on Apr 12, 2014Did you get organic sweet potato's? You need organic. Also if the temp is to cold they will not sprout until the temp is in the 70's +Helpful Reply

Barbara Felps on Apr 12, 2014I always put the whole potato in water. Sit it on a shelf where it will get bright light but not sun. I never did worry about organic, got mine from the grocery storeHelpful Reply

Douglas Hunt on Apr 13, 2014The University of Illinois's extension service recommends using the whole potato as well. Make sure it is in a bright spot. It can take several weeks for it to start sprouting.Helpful Reply

Sarah Carroll on Apr 13, 2014My first thought was that it had been spayed not to sprout. Then I saw where you are from, I am south of you about 70 miles and I figure we re not going to have Spring just jump right into summer or we are a month behind for planting. Maybe the sweet potatoe needs more sun and if by a window the leaks air it could be just too cold! Hope you get results for the comments are good. I think my first thought I would try first and I would cut the potatoe in half too!Helpful Reply

Teri Tripp-Lanciault on Apr 13, 2014If the whole potato method fails, your spud was likely sprayed with BudNip to keep it from sprouting. I wish they would leave our food alone, but that is not likely. I am with Norrie. Find a nice organic sweet spud and try that! Good luck!Helpful Reply
