How can I compost in a small apartment?

I live in an apartment, I don't have a yard to have a compost pile or a place to keep a worm container in my apartment. I would like to start composting on a small scale. I have a small space next to the steps that I can use for the a plastic bin for composting. My questions are: can I keep add more kitchen scraps? Should I cut up the scraps before adding them? What do I do with it in the winter? Do I mix it every time I add to it? How much sun does it need? Sorry for all the questions, but I'm new to all this and all the articles I've been reading are for people with big yards or people with worms. Thanks for helping!

Ask the apartment manager first, compost bins attract a lot of animals. Check in your community for a community garden, or ask your apartment manager if you can start a community garden in your apartment complex.

Thank you, there are no community gardens near by. And there seems to be very little interest in our development for one. It was tried and failed. My one neighbor and I grow herbs and flowers in containers on the steps. The landlord is fine with it.

any thing that was once green can be composted. Compost done right will not stink. No oils or plastic in the mix. Yes you can keep adding scraps, and keep the pile turned.

compost is a mixture of brown(dried/dead) & green you need both; the smaller the pieces the faster they break down even using a blender can help;heat & moisture is what helps break down of organic waste;no proteins that is what makes it stink;composting does not attract critters if done correctly(if you get fungus gnats you can add Nematodes) here are many videos on apt sized composting with or without worms. I my composting set ups. https://www.youtube.com/results?search_query=diy+make+your+apartment+sized+worm+compost have fun!!!

  • Here's a great 101-style article on getting started with composting and everything you ever need to know. It's geared to the outside, but you can use the same composting concepts for your apartment. Hope this all helps and happy composting! Hugs, Holly

Don't add cooked kitchen scrapes, just the raw peelings, tops etc. Be sure if your using say a 5 gal bucket to drill some holes in the bottom and set on a few bricks by your steps. Get something like a mini shovel or fireplace shovel to turn it with periodically. You might have to secure it somehow if critters like racoons, possums, rats, etc get into it.
