You can, but I do not think you would get the same yield as if planted in a large pot or in ground. BUT, I think it is an interesting idea and if you are willing to sacrafice one plant to experiment and try, I say do it! You have nothing to lose really.

I planted several last year in plain plastic hangers and they did fine. No special plants either. I loved them!!
