Can I put potting soil against stucco block house for DIY plant box?

I am building railroad tie planters on either side of my porch but have been told not to put soil directly against the block stucco house because of insects. Is this true? I don't want to add additional ties against the house because of the expense.

Sounds like its important to make sure to use a barrier for drainage and insect avoidance

Perhaps you can run heavy plastic from each end of the planters across the stucco as a barrier and run it down just beyond the original soil level so that the soil you put in the planter will hold it up. you could run a narrow piece of wood at the top, just away from the stucco to hold up the upper edge.
