Yes, I have before just check them daily as they seem to dry out rather quickly
Yes you can, in fact they do well, but you will need to water them more than if they are in the ground as they dry out faster in planters on a deck.
Squirrels are the worst. I put mothballs around any place I have planted or the little buggers dig stuff up just to see what I have been up to.
Yes you can, just be diligent about watering. Almost any herb will grow well in planters or pots. I leave peanuts for the squirrels so for the most part they leave my stuff alone. To me, moth balls are toxic, I do not want seeping into the soil with something I am eventually going to eat. Use red pepper flakes or sprinkle with cayenne.
For the squirrel problem, smear Vaseline on the planters. The squirrels will slide off. As for the cats, try placing citrus peels (lemons, limes and oranges) in the pots - cats do NOT like the smell of citrus. Good luck!
Thank you. Never buy moth balls but know they are good to put around the garbage cans outside as they keep the skunks and raccoons away but we have little kids and don't want to harm them.
I will try your suggestion.
You can, but you must keep them moist as railing planters tend to be shallow and dry out quickly. If you place a good sized plastic pot on the deck and plant there you will have much better success.
