I think you are referring to an auger. Be careful if using a hand held version. They will jerk you around and if you hit a rock it can completely get away from you.

You need a red drill and the bit for the end
All you need is a regular drill but a cordless drill will be much easier if your flower beds are big or farther from your electric outlet then your cord is long. Or you don't want to drag a heavy outdoor extension cord around. You will also need either a spade or an auger bit that fits your drill. If using a 1/2 inch drill you'll need a 1/2 shaft on your bit for it to fit your drill. Any home improvement store can help you with getting the right bit if your not sure. Then your set to plant to your hearts content!
