Everything that I have read says no. Garden soil is supposedly too heavy for use in potted plants. It's best to use potting soil because it is formulated to be used in pots. It costs more but in the long run your potted plants will be happier. I supposed you could use garden soil if you mixed in some peat moss to make it lighter.
I would mix dirt with potting soil. You want a soil that's loose. Same reason that you add compost or other supplements to your garden beds or landscape plantings.

No, garden soil does not have the nutrients needed for potting. Use potting soil.
