Just about anything can be planted in a container with the right size pot, sun, etc. for the plants. Do you want flowers or veggies, or what. Herbs are easy to grow in pots and could serve as a good beginners way to container garden and go from there.
The best advice I can give you regarding container gardening, is about drainage. I know you can purchase pots that have drainage holes already in them, but here's a trick for pots with no holes. Put some rocks in the bottom of the pot. About 3 or 4 rocks high. Then put a couple layers of newspaper on top of the rocks. Then put in your soil and then plants. This way if you over water your plants, the extra water will sit in the rocks, and not in the roots. Roots with too much water will rot. I hope this info helps you. Good luck.
