How to grow grass quickly?

We live in north carolina. We just had to have our septic pipe replaced. There is a huge mud pit in the back yard. We were told if we got grass growing there would be less mud. The backyard is pretty muddy now. Does anyone have any ideas on how to get grass growing quickly.

Thanks

  • If it is too wet and muddy the grass seeds will just drown and not germinate. How about bringing in some topsoil to sop up some of the moisture then spread the seed. Does the area receive enough sun?

Rye grass is an extremely fast growing grass, and won't take over your yard. It grows well in full sun or shade, and takes little maintenance. Check with your home and garden center. They can give you the particulars about the rye grass in your area, but it does make a quick cover. In our area in Texas, many hunters plant rye grass here for the deer, because all you have to do is stir up the ground a little bit and toss the grass seed on top. That's it! Nature takes care of the rest, and within a week, you will have grass coming up!

Thanks a bunch. I live in TX and need a grass to fill in an area beneath a tree. Hope it works well here too.

Why grow grass? Grass is not environmentally friendly. Check with your local extension service or conservation district to find out what plants are native to your area. Native plants are good for the environment, use much less water, are very low maintenance, bring in the declining pollinators and are beautiful. And, since you don't currently have grass in that area it would be easy to transform to a native plant garden.

Thank you but I would like to walk on my lawn. Not an area I was planning on growing a garden

You're welcome! I wouldn't consider rye a permanent solution, but for quick cover, it can't be beat!

After you get it dried up some and leveled off, I found that when I replanted, I had to do it several times to get good grass.

Rye grass does die out in winter, which makes it a non-permanent solution. It needs to be reseeded each year. Check with your local feed and seed store for winter rye if you use it during winter. Good planting!
