I have never personally done it, but my good friend in North Carolina has done an absolutely gorgeous flower bed with this method. She likes it a lot and insists that it's the best way to go in terms of container gardening. I just emailed her to see if I can get a picture to post!

I've had a Straw Bale Garden for 4 years now. I love it! No weeding, no bending and it produces a great crop. If you're thinking about it, I would suggest you buy Joel Karstens straw bale garden book. They sell it at Lowe's or you can order it online. It teaches you everything you need to know. If you do it the right way, you'll never go back to dirt. Another nice thing is you can put it anywhere, even on concrete If you don't have a sunny spot in your yard! Good luck and good gardening!
I would think it would be a good place for mice to live!
I don't think mice will want to live in there! LOL.. You have to keep the bales moist for the plants to grow.
