Hi Paula. Gardening is a long term project with fantastic rewards. Look into planting perennials. It is a little tricky at first, but any gardener that has a perennial garden will share both information and plants.
Take a picture of where you want to establish a garden, maybe make a sketch and/or scan to the computer. Draw or paste plant pictures on your picture. You don't need to be specific, just maybe height and color. Take your drawing to a someone that is savvy about plants (4-H group, nursery, master gardener). They will ask about the soil (maybe bring a sample), the amount of sun, access to water, and what you want (plus more).
Begin with a few native plants that are likely to do well since they are "local". Add more as you go. Ask others to share and where that type of plant would do best. Ask, ask, ask...
