Hi, Erin, You may need heavy duty "Brush Kill", or try "painting" round up on the leaves of the new growth. You may also need to pour a large amount of Epsom salts into the area of the stump that was ground out, then lightly water it in. This should help to dessicate the stump. If all else fails and you're permitted, you can drill numerous holes in the remainder of the stump, pour a small amount of gasoline in the holes, and from a safe distance, ignite it, using a long pole.

I'd also take a hatchet or ax and strike the root areas remaining, gouging the spaces to accelerate death.

he easiest way to kill a sweetgum (that is clear of anything it can damage) is to "ring" the bark about 2 to 3 inches around the base. Remove bark down to the bare wood and coat with an herbicide. In two to three months the tree will be dead. THEN cut down.

Probably the best way to initially kill sweetgum is with a chemical called Arsenal. Depending on the size of the trees it can be injected or if small seedling/sapling size the trees can be cut then this chemical (or something similar) can be sprayed over the top of the newly cut seedlings.

Not what you are asking for, but would it be possible to dig up the plantlets with some of root and pot up. You could sell them or give them away... Best wishes.

When you apply stump killer or more Round Up, I will drill several large holes into the stump and apply the chemicals in the holes.

Begin the process by combining 100 percent Epsom salt with water to create a solution that will decay the stump's root system. Next, drill about a dozen 1-inch-wide holes into the stump. Each hole should be roughly 10 inches deep. Then, pour liberal amounts of the Epsom salt mixture into the holes.
