We have an apple tree too. We just prune the lower branches or the branches that are in the way or are getting too close to our roof. We don't fertilize it at all. Maybe this is wrong but we get a ton of apples. Good luck!

We have four apple trees and we prune the branches that cross each other and the lower branches off the trunk. We also put 3 iron spikes around each tree out as far as the branches reach. Apple trees need water in areas that do not get a lot of water. We save our roof water, which is allowed in our area. Hope this helps.

It helps to spray the tree with fungicide BEFORE the buds bloom in the Spring. This will provide you with more apples because there will be a lot less rotten apples come late Summer or early Fall.

Spike fertilizers work best but your success with fruit trees depends upon the pollination that has already taken place. Fingers crossed
