How do I get my grass to grow with dogs and kids running around on it?

I have two dogs, two kids and lots of dirt patches in my back yard. We cannot seem to find a way to grow the grass and stop the dirt and mud from being tracked everywhere. Including in my house. Cleaning it up all the time is frustrating. Help!

We’ve been overseeding with clover for years. It’s much hardier than grass and can withstand kid and dog traffic. It also needs much less water so it stays green in droughts.

Also some mulch in that area to help fill in the muddy spots..might help... + get the kids to scrape off any mud on a door mat or boot brush and take off their shoes/boots..
We made rock and gravel paths through the really muddy areas that our dogs frequented. The area closest to the house is almost all river rock now. I have a few plants in the area as well as a couple of flower beds. It's helped a lot with the major messes coming in. We still have the spring muddiness with our younger dog. He doesn't care about getting wet so he doesn't stick to the paths the way our other dogs did.
Years ago, in another house, we planted zoyzia grass and it did great. As with anything there are pros and cons to it. This article will give you a good information about it.
