I put a purchased plant every year in a twelve inch pot with good potting soil. I don't give it anything special except an extended release fertilizer when I plant it. I don't do anything but water it regularly, especially when it is really hot out. I have mine in a self watering pot and fill it when it is empty. My plant gets about two feet high by fall and have plenty to freeze for the winter. Herbs are not hard to grow, enough water and sunlight and they take off like gang busters.
