Begin with planter boxes or large terra cotta pots. Make sure the containers offer growing space because herbs love to stretch out above and under the soil. Since you're in a apartment I would go with already mixed soil from the nursery. (Buy in bags) and then choose a selection of herbs you want to grow. Get Started in the spring when freezing temperatures are no longer a risk. In the meantime you can start in stages so the cost of getting started is spread out. You can plant by seed or purchase plants in the spring in nurseries.
