How does one grow melons in a container?

I am disabled and must garden in the high planters or containers. I long to grow melons but they seem to need to sprawl. Is there a way this can be accomplished without having to grow them directly in the ground? Sorry, no pictures to offer.

you could try vertical gardening; try training the vine to grow on a trellis; you'll have to use plant ties that are available at your local garden center. Good luck!

Loved the video and it was helpful. I am inspired to try again. I already have a bag so why not? Thanks.

Do you have a large wide or round container you can lift up? Vertical sounds good, but I do not think it would work if a mellon formed on the trellis.

Could you grow a melon inside of a mesh bag (like you get with fruit or a ham) that was supported by a shepards crook?

Check seed catalogs. There is a bush melon(watermelon that is. Ties for climbing plants on trellis can be anything that is kind of soft(old rags in strips, old hose you can't use) Tie loosely. V Smith has right idea. Most melons are heavy so it's best to have some extra support or they will fall off. Bags should also allow room for light and air around plant and fruit.

Also melons love fertilizer...animal manure if you can get it. Don't overlook rabbit manure. I cleaned out a pen and just threw it into the strawberry patch. The plants were at least 6" tall on that end of patch while others barely made 2.

Thanks everyone for the ideas. I think a small melon with some vertical height and the bags/etc for support as well. Wish me luck!
