How often do I water an avocado plant?

I have had bad luck with my avocado plants watering them as often as I water regular house plants. The leaves wither up and drop. I am trying to figure out how often to water it. If you have had success, please let me know. Thanks!

  • These grow like weeds for me, but mine are outside only as I am in zone 9 and right down the road from commercial growers.

Depends on how hot or cold you house may be, and whether it receives enough light, not just water. Stick your finger in the pot at least 2" deep. If damp, check in a couple days. They don't like wet feet, so it should be in well draining soil. When you do water, place it in a sink or bathtub and let the water completely drain before returning to its home.

Hi. Treat avocado trees as you would any other tropical tree that needs full sun. Provide lots of light, air flow and regular watering but with good drainage. Consider a plant light and a small fan that's not pointed directly on the tree. Happy Gardening!

Hi Judith, it may be too much salt in your water, as per below, you could boil some water and store it for water the avocado

Browning leaf tips are often a sign of salt burn, caused by a salt build up in the soil. Salts in the water and in fertilizer build up over time. Browning usually occurs on the old leaves first. ... Always water plants thoroughly before and after applying fertilizer to help prevent burn.

I would suggest getting a moisture meter to help gauge when you need to water. Menards usually has one in the gardening section that is cheap and works well. We use it on all of our plants that are in the house, including the ones that overwinter in the house, since all plants aren't equal in how much and how often they like to be watered. The wand you stick in the soil is long enough that you can even measure the moisture level further down in the soil. I hope this will help you with your avocado plant!
