How to temporarily plant my hostas and monkey grass during winter?

Just moved. Need to temp put plants inground until spring and placement selection. Hosta's (60) and Monkey Grass (42). Safe to just plant in one large group over winter?

Depends where you are How cold does it get?is it mostly snow or nasty cold wind and freezing icy rain,or bitter cold below 0, or maybe like where I live still in 80's & 90's AZ

  North Carolina. Although I am a "transplant" myself. The winters here seem to be relatively short (for me, I a Kansas girl). Not all that harsh. Cold, not a lot of snow. Rare to have below temps. My "thinking" was to plant all fairly close together in a corner area until warmer. Then move to perm locals in yard.? Previously having trouble with "Rust" on Hosta's, Too close together maybe?

  If you don't get any major freezing you can put them in carport put bales of straw around outside edges/base of pots & winter them over there.Even leave them in pots out in yard add dirt,mulch,straw all around base of pots(heel them in) https://www.starkbros.com/growing-guide/article/how-to-delay-planting. Put Daylilies outer edges they're hardier than rest then put in ground later, you can even plant them thru out winter if they are dormant and ground is to frozen to dig.Here's pics of Hosta problems. http://www.missouribotanicalgarden.org/gardens-gardening/your-garden/help-for-the-home-gardener/advice-tips-resources/visual-guides/hosta-problems.aspx If the hostas have rust probably best to cut them off remove all foliage and put in sealed garbage bag in garbage or if possible burn so it doesn't spread. make sure you have them spaced well . The banana tree can go inside til it can be put outside and adjust to new surroundings really bright window no direct sun. water when dried thoroughly. You've taken on a challenge,I always take my plants with me when I move or at least starts,cuttings of them. What growing zone do you live? Does it snow and freeze in the winter? More information would be helpful.

can always plant in pots & bring into a garage or inside

  Too many - 40 Hosta's, 3 yr old & 30 monkey grass's. Also Hydrangea, day lily, periwinkle and banana plants. Carport, no garage.

Hi Jacqui. You can temperately plant them. Just make sure to space them. My parents moved and did this too. They put theirs in the garden and moved them as they redid the flower beds. Good Luck and Congrats on your new home!

Y es. Just heel them in and mulch. did this from summer thru winter with no problem
