Hello. Most landscaping gardening success depend on hardness geographic planting zones associated with soil ph, weather conditions along with proper care.

Additionally for the best local professional advice

I would highly suggest contacting your cooperative extension. These offices are manned by volunteer master gardeners on site there waiting to answer the communities questions that know your local situation quite well.

Master gardeners are required to volunteer back designated hours ( plus continuing education) each year to maintain MG certification -this community outreach and education is their goal.

If your areas physical office is closed....there might be alternative online venues like Ask an Expert as well as emailing your local master gardeners extension office for their guidance.

I know our extension service has a publication by the local university with the type of seed that is suggested for our area along with helpful publications to guide you. Some extensions even have dedicated smart lawn programs.

Check into St. Augustine grass.l It's very good for that type of soil. You might have to amend the soil.

I am hoping to find grass that does not need mowing... A low growing low maintenance ... maybe like periwinkle? clover? thyme?

  • You will need to amend your soil. Add topsoil, composted manure, and or peat. Then you need to find the best grass seed for your area and soil. Here's a link with more information:

We are on a barrier island in Florida and our lot is about 10,000 square feet.... sandy...

I would amend if it were a small area .... some bring in turf, have water sprinklers and a gardening lawn service.

      Big expense.

Go to your local nursery for advice. They will give you best advice for your area and will have the products needed to fix the problem.

I would go online or call your local county extension service and they can tell you exactly what grass to plant and even do soil testing for you so you know what to add to the sand/soil for your grass

We are seasonal residents , winter only, so do not want to worry about the lawn in the summer...

Will look into this again when we return.
