How to start a mulch pile?
We would like to start growing more of our own food and believe that having a mulch pile would be very beneficial and great for the environment. How would you get started and maintain a project like this?
Climate info: We will be about 60 miles south of Chattanooga in North West Georgia.
Thanks,
Denise R

Is a mulch pile the same as a compost pile? We've done our own compost for years.. it's super easy! Starting with leaves, weeds, clippings, twigs.. stuff from around your yard area. Just keep tossing it on the pile. *We NEVER add meat of any kind, and always rinse our egg shells.* We live in southern Mississippi and have LOTS of 'critters' that like to visit, so we keep possible odors out. Anyway, it piles up and starts breaking down. You should get plenty of rain in Georgia, but if not you can always water it. Turn it and mix it periodically... and when it starts putting out steam when you are turning it, it's ready to go! Ours is filled with worms and crawly bugs that are fantastic mulch and eventually... potting soil! Good luck with yours!
Hi Denise - Did you mean mulch pile or were you referring to a compost pile? If it's compost, here is a great 101 style article to get started. Hope it helps. Hugs, Holly

What you want is a compost pile. Start with raked leaves, then add greens like mowed grass. Bury all kitchen scraps except meat, chicken and fat. Turn over with a pitch fork every so often. Keep the whole pile slightly moist. It should "cook" all the insects and by next summer you should have some good, dark mulch. Start a second pile next to the first so while you are using the mulch from the first, you have a second working.
I think you mean a compost pile. Compost nourishes the soil and it's easy to start a pile. I have a guide written on that topic. Here you go -- https://homegardenjoy.com/site/free-gardening-info/how-to-make-compost
