I just got a beautiful container garden. They have many beautiful varieties of container gardens on Amazon. You could probably find a large planter or raised patio garden kit at your local gardening store. Good luck! This is my patio garden: http://momhomeguide.com/gardening-made-easy-raised-patio-planter/
You can change the look of our planters easily, quickly and inexpensively by covering them with wallpaper, contact paper, washi tape, or mod podge lightweight fabric.
I bought big 5 gallon buckets an painted the outside drilled small hol in the bottom for drainag. I have tomato plants growing in them an they are east to move to mow or clean. NO weeding 😍
Without having to spend a lot of $$, cover container with contact paper. Cut scrap pieces of wood to attach to the outside...see where I'm going with this. Options are endless.
You can cover them in burlap. Or any other fabric you might choose for that matter. You can add bricks to the bottom of some to add height to your arrangement. Have fun! Link attached with an example.

I had similar gripes about ugly plastic containers. Went to the thrift store and bought a bunch of reed and bamboo type placemats and table runners. All I had to do was wrap them around the buckets and clip them with binder clips. I also used some rubberized shelf liner with a woven textile pattern. One roll will cover several pots. Nothing is easier!
I like all the idea .I went for the contact paper .I also didn't like my tomatoes in the plain bucket .
Ceramic pots are one solution... but here is one I like.... inexpensive, the critters can't climb them, LOTS of sizes and configurations, they can be painted, last a long time..put them on plant dollies to move around
To late this year, but consider spray painting your buckets next year.
