Hi Cindy. I am in WI. I put my first application down in April. I start with crab grass preventer. Then in mid may I use weed and feed. You can check the back of bag for different zones and best time/temp to apply.

You want to make sure that the ground is well thawed or the fertilizer will just run off if it rains, instead of absorbing into the ground.

We use a pre-emergent fertilizer with a weed retardant. Feb. or March is a good time for us, to try to keep weeds from sprouting up before the grass gets a chance to take hold. Then in May, we use fertilizer with a post emergent, still trying to keep the weeds under control. Sometime in late autumn, we get a fertilizer to help the roots stay strong through the winter. That’s three applications with three different fertilizers. When we follow this schedule, we have a beautiful lawn except for August and January. We are in north Texas, next to Dallas. ☺️
