I need help in creating a greenhouse in my "4 Seasons Room"

This room is 8' X 16'; it has a southern exposure and glass on 3 sides. I recently moved from a large home with a sunroom which was filled with plants. So far, my African violets and Christmas Cacti are doing very well in this room. I want it to be pretty--but it's NOT pretty now. Thanks!

  • How exciting! No matter what it looks like now, it can be beautiful with a bit of time and patience. What furniture or plant stands do you have to work with? Or are you starting from scratch? Do you need need to paint or do flooring? If you need plant stands, shop garage sales, second hand shops, thrift stores. As long as they are in good shape, you can clean them up and paint to unify them if you wish. Here are some links and see if you get any ideas that might work in your space.

I assume because you call it a 4 seasons room that it is warm enough for any kind of plants. You could go with hanging pots like spider plants, perhaps some tuberous begonias in bright red, yellow or both. I know around here you can find mostly plants that aren't flowering except for orchids, but you can find a lot of the taller plants to start with like the palm type plants, ferns, etc. You could get some ivies and other vining plants. Come closer in spring and you can start getting the flowering plants that will be available to brighten things up. You may want to put in some hibiscus that will flower year round in big pots. Get some patio furniture that would have a tropical look to go with all the plants so that you can enjoy your mini jungle. Everyone that comes to your house will really enjoy your room full of plants. You don't want to loose a lot of the light from the windows, so I would stick with low shelves along the windows, with hanging pots along the upper parts of the windows. You could make your work station close to the area you have the door into the room. I would go with a somewhat long work bench with a hutch to store all your tools and a lower shelf or two underneath for storing pots and soil and the bigger things. I hope this helps!
