Is it ok to use weeds for mulch pile?

I have a ton of weeds in my yard. I pulled them all and put them into an old cast iron bathtub. They have turned into mulch. I was wondering if it's ok to use that mulch in the yard or would it just spread the weeds again?

    How does one hot compost?

To be safe, I would never compost weeds! I am not knowledgeable or patient enough to know if they have seeded and how to hot compost. To be safe, I say, "NEVER TURN YOUR BACK ON A WEED"! HA! Here in Georgia, things are almost sub-tropical so a weed needs very little encouragement to ravage your garden!

I love seeing a potato or tomato popping up in the compost pile:). One of the most important things to remember when composting weeds is to know if you have sprayed weed killer or a applied a pre emergent weed prevent before you go tossing it into your compost pile. And as the great other responders have stated if it has a seed and you don't know if your pile is hot enough to cook the little buggers, then don't toss it on the pile.

Definitely don't compost weeds! Not unless you want more of them!

Absolutely not, weeds should never go in your compost.

NO! Never! You will have weeds up the wazoo in the spring. I speak from bitter experience.

I agree with everyone else. I don't compost weeds. It's not worth the agony of having them reappear when you use the compost.

I built the soil in one section of my garden by tossing pulled weeds in the area I wanted to build up. It worked just fine for me.

I would put your weeds into a large drum of water or bucket (depending how many weeds you have) and let them sit for about a month. You can then use the weed water on your garden as a boost for your soil. If you put weeds into compost - it needs to be a hot compost ie. a compost heap that is large enough (about 1m) to generate enough heat to kill the seeds, otherwise you will be putting weeds seeds back onto your garden. If you use one of those plastic bin type composters, it won't generate the heat needed to kill the weed seeds. You should not put your weeds into those bins for that reason.

How do you know if it has "set seed"?
  • Easiest way to explain: if the weed has flowered then seeds will follow (just like any plant/flower in your garden). In grasses, the seeds are the plumes. Some weeds will spread and grow by roots if any roots are not pulled up ( such as crabgrass and water grass).

No, you will end up with more weeds in your garden.

Only if they have not begun to go to seed.
