You didn't mention if you had Annuals or Perennials. Annuals are only seasonal plants, so expect them to die off.
Potting Soils have nutrients in the soil, I don't think it's the potting soil.
Also consider the sunlight required and how much or how little to water the plants, those are other factors to be considered.
Yes, you still do, you just need the right soil for whatever you are planting. Do not give up hope! May take a little bit of a scouting mission to see what retailer has the best in your area.

I get mine fresh mixed from a local nursery, costs a little more than the commercially bagged mixes, but worth it. I still use a commercial bagged soil on occasion, always good to have on hand.
Potting soil with Miracle Grow always works for me.
there are many blends of soil, some plants need certain nutrients. succulents need a certain type. start with a good all purpose mix, read up on the plants you are planting.
You can always look it up on the net and find several recipes for making your own mixture.
