Have your soil checked at Home Depot

I love my japanese maple, I would have an arborist look at it before you remove it,,, it might be able to save it with a good professional pruning.

Often a way to check viability is to take a pen knife blade and scrape the bark on a branch to see if it is alive beneath the bark. This can be a useful test for trees and shrubs.

Deborah this happened to LOTS of people,

I live in a suburb of Chicago and this past winter

was very brutal to our plants.

Remember that Polar Vortex we endured for several days?

Everything was covered in ice including all the branches of the trees and bushes.

My ten year old Japanese Maple tree was the envy of the block.

    It was a beautiful tree!

This Spring I noticed no new leaves and thought it

was just starting late, but it only grew tiny leaves at the base.

I called around to some garden centers and they

verified how prevalent it was in our area.

Now as I drive around I notice all the dead trees and bushes.

I'm going to wait until next Spring before taking out the tree,

who knows maybe it will resprout on those branches?

    I'm willing to wait.

I also lost my 30 year old Wisteria vine,

that too has small growth at the trunk so I know it's not completely dead.

I would suggest waiting one year before taking out your Maple tree.
