Easy budget friendly: Poke holes in the caps of large empty soda bottles, fill with water, place them upside down in your plants for self watering. Make sure you water all your plants well, prior to leaving. If you're absent for a long period of time, a drip system with a timer is more efficient. Best of luck.
We live in Phoenix, AZ ... so vacations mean keeping stuff alive while gone.. even for a few days.....
Check in the irrigation section of your local home improvement store... there are battery operated irrigation timers... but.... you will need to install either a sprinkler or drip system ... for ease of installation run it on top of the ground and attach to the faucet via a hose...
For ideas check our Gardeners.com... they have several kits for garden watering... adapt the ideas to your application or use one of their kits.
Get some pvc piping, drill holes near one end, push the piping into the ground and fill with water.
Use large buckets or coffee cans with some holes drilled in the sides and set them down into the dirt. Then fill them with water before you leave.
