Thinking spring- where do I start for container gardening?

I am thinking ahead. I want to have a spectacular container garden in a section of my yard. I have a brown thumb, so where do I start? I have some pretty pots. Does the pot need a hole in the bottom? Do you put potting soil to fill a large pot or is there a substitute to place on the bottom. Thanks, think spring

All pots need drainage holes. You can fill the large ones with empty water or soda bottles to keep the weight down and use less soil.Choose you flowers based on lighting. When planting make sure all the plants require the same water.

larger containers i'll put packing peanuts in the bottom to help with drainage...it makes the pot a bit lighter as well. and yes you need a hole or to so water can escape when you get hit with 6 inches of rain in a night.

put a piece of landscape fabric over the peanuts before you put the potting mix in. it will keep the potting mix from clogging the drainage.
